Professional consultation

Develop a strong clinical practice

Crys Brown offers professional consultation for psychologists, counsellors, and other mental health care professionals who are looking for support in their work with OCD, anxiety disorders, trauma (including PTSD), and general assessment. Much of Crys’ clinical work in the past few years has been with folks who have complex mental health concerns with multiple diagnoses, and Crys is particularly well suited to help with this sort of case.

Crys has been offering consultation as a professional service for several years, as well as training and supervision, and would love to help you expand your clinical skills!

Frequently asked questions

  • Crys charges 250.00 per hour for professional consultation. 30 minute consultations at a pro-rated fee are an option when that’s appropriate.

  • Consultation is a non-binding professional service with no gate-keeping function. A consultant does not make clinical decisions for you and does not bear professional responsibility for your actions after the consult. Consultants are usually experts in a certain specific clinical area, and you may meet with them once or over a period of time, but this period of time is not set out in a contract.

Supervisors, on the other hand, have a gate-keeping role, carry liability for what their supervisees do, and their feedback can be considered a directive rather than a suggestion. Supervisory relationships are ongoing, usually involve a contract, and are usually lengthy relationships that involve oversight of a person’s entire practice.

If you book a consultation you will be sent an informed consent that outlines a little more about the process, such as documentation best practices so that you can receive consultation in a professional and ethical manner.

  • First we’ll set an agenda of what we’re hoping to cover. You might have one case to ask about, multiple cases, or technical questions.

If you are looking for feedback on a case, we’ll start with a run-down of the case. This should not take more than 10 or 15 minutes, and should include relevant clinical information and should of course NOT include identifying information about your client.

Please have access to your file while we do the consult, and have any document that you want Crys to review, like an exposure hierarchy, in a format that Crys can see it without seeing client identifying information.

  • Crys is a warm communicator who loves to crack jokes, but will also take your time and money very seriously by being direct and getting right down to business.

Crys is supportive, enthusiastic, and encouraging about learning, and will often make suggestions of resources to read or trainings that might be helpful. While learning is the main goal of consultation, there are times when a consultee might not be quite ready to help a certain client, and in those instances they might be encouraged to refer the client to a different clinician while they are building skills.

Crys gives a balance of positive and constructive feedback, but the tone and pace of a consult is not the same as a therapy session or even a supervision meeting, because in these one hour meetings we have the goal of answering specific technical questions. The pace in these meetings is just a little faster than it might be in other kinds of professional meetings because of this.

At the end of the day, getting specialist consultation is also a skill, and Crys will always be happy to answer questions or give feedback to help you feel more comfortable in your consultation meetings.
